PROBLEM

With nearly 25 million adult Americans who have reported that they have trouble seeing even with their glasses, the concern for safety increases drastically. A lot of us who can see well can take advantage of this ability and do not have to worry about their daily lives. However, those who are visually impaired have a much harder time doing some of the most simplest tasks such as crossing a street. Crossing the street seems like an easy enough task to do on your own however with the rising population of electric cars, it becomes very difficult for visually impaired people to hear those cars coming. Our project is aimed to help those who are visually impaired to recognize those cars and walk across the street safely. This device not only is aimed to be intuitive and provide a new type of safety for the user, but is able to be concealed and small enough to fit in you pocket as well. With this device, our team aims to have a phone shaped box with a radar transmitter and receiver that can pick a car from safe enough distance away for the user to react. With this device, the user can not only be notified if there is in fact a car coming their way but can alert the user how fast and how close the electric car is based on the frequency and intensity of the alerts.
